Faculty Teaching Provision for Undergraduates

A table showing distribution of Teaching between Departments in the Faculty for 2012-13

Undergraduate teaching provision (as agreed by the Faculty Board at its meetings on 8 November 2004, 21 February and 13 June 2005, 29 June 2009, 28 June 2010, 14 March 2011 and 20 February 2012.):

1. Ab initio provision (ie Papers A1, A2 and A3)

    • a maximum of 4 hours of Faculty teaching per week (ie excluding College supervisions), with an exception allowed for Russian based on the recognised difficulty of learning this language from scratch.

    2. Part IA/B language provision (ie Papers B1 and B2)

    • there should be an average class size of 13 and 14, with a maximum class size of 16
    • Paper B1 classes should be taught weekly, with only six pieces of written work per term
    • Paper B2 classes should be taught fortnightly (ie eight hours per year: 4 in Michaelmas and 4 in Lent)

    3. Part IB language provision (ie Paper B3)

    • Paper B3 classes should be taught fortnightly (ie ten hours per year)
    • variable arrangements are allowed for the provision of Language through Audio Visual Media

    4. Part II language provision

    • Paper C1 classes should be taught fortnightly (ten hours per year)
    • Paper C1 should have an average class size of 12
    • Paper C2 classes should be taught fortnightly (ten hours per year)

    5. Scheduled paper teaching

    • the teaching norm should be 16-20 hours with effect from October 2009, with the exception of Fr. 1, Ge. 1, It. 1, Pg. 1, Ru. 1 and Sp. 1, which shall each be up to 24 hours.

Where an established discrepancy to these 'norms' is apparent in a department's provision, a clear statement will be issued, for students, Directors of Studies and external bodies, outlining the sound pedagogical reasons for this variation.
