Melveena McKendrick specialises in the literature of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, particularly the theatre and its socio-ideological context. Her publications include Woman and Society in the Spanish Drama of the Golden Age (1974); Cervantes (1980); Calderón's El mágico prodigioso (1982); Theatre in Spain 1490-1700 (1989); Playing the King: Lope de Vega and the Limits of Conformity (2000); and Identities in Crisis: Essays on Honour, Gender and Women in the 'Comedia' (2002).
