Christopher Pountain specialises in Romance linguistics, especially the structure and history of the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula. Recent publications include A History of the Spanish Language through Texts (Routledge, 2001), Exploring the Spanish Language (Arnold, 2003) and many articles on Spanish historical syntax and semantics. His current research interests are the role of pragmatic factors in syntactic change, the 'learned' influence of Latin on the Romance languages and register in the history of Spanish. Pedagogical reference works include Using Spanish (with R.E. Batchelor, Cambridge: CUP, 1992) and Modern Spanish Grammar (with Juan Kattán-Ibarra, Routledge, 1997).
