All candidates for Part II take three language papers: Oral, Translation and Essay. These may be done in any language represented in your scheduled (content) papers (see below). It is possible to do Translation in one language and Essay in another, but it is advisable to do both papers in one language. One of the written language papers must be in the language in which you do the Oral examination. Full information about these language papers is given below. It is advisable to take at least one scheduled paper in the same language as your Essay paper.
Candidates take three scheduled (content) papers in their Final Year and must in addition undertake one Year-Abroad Project which may take the form of a dissertation or a translation project (an optional dissertation may also be substituted for one of your three scheduled papers). You will be asked to state the subject area of your Year-Abroad Project towards the end of your Second Year. You must keep in regular contact with your supervisor during your Year Abroad. The optional dissertation is undertaken during your Final Year of study. The Year-Abroad Dissertations should not be less than 6,000 words and not more than 8,000 words; the Translation Project has a limit of 6,000 to 7,000 words, and the Optional Dissertation (written during the final year) must be between 8,000 and 10,000 words. The date for submission of the Year Abroad Project is Friday, 15th October 2004, and the date for submission of optional dissertations is the first weekday in March of your Final Year. See the information on Dissertations, and for further details see the Faculty booklet "Part II Dissertations".
