Part I in Spanish or Portuguese

Overview:

Structure of Part Ia

At Part Ia (the First Year), all students study two languages and take the following papers in each:

These papers are taught through a mixture of classes, supervisions and lectures. However, the types of classes, lectures, and supervisions vary according to whether your language is ab initio or post-A-level.

AB INITIO (Option A)

In the case of ab initio students, there may be no distinction between the 'Use of' and 'Translation' classes, and the classes are supplemented by weekly language and oral supervisions. For ab initio students, there are no options to choose from with regard to the scheduled (content) paper, since all such students must undertake a special ab initio 'Introduction to Hispanic / Lusophone Literature' paper, which also includes an element of translation.

For full details of the ab initio course, please see Ab initio Course and Starting Spanish or Portuguese from Scratch.

POST-A-LEVEL (Option B)

'Use of' classes are weekly, and Translation classes are fortnightly, and both are taught at the Faculty. Oral work is taught in Language with Oral Component supervisions. For more information about the language classes, see Language Work.

Scheduled (content) papers are taught via lectures and fortnightly supervisions, and you can choose from two different scheduled papers. For more information about scheduled paper choices,  follow one of the links below:
