Paper SP C1

Translation from and into Spanish

All candidates for Part II must offer one 'Composition and Translation' paper, in one of the languages corresponding to the Part II scheduled papers. Suppose that you spend your Year Abroad in Spain or Latin America and choose to do the Spanish 'Composition and Translation'.

Classes are weekly, alternating into/from Spanish, n.b. depending on the group you are in, you will have your into Spanish class in odd or even weeks, and the alternating week your from Spanish class.

Your examination will consist of two passages, one in English, about 300 words long, to be translated into Spanish, and the other, in Spanish, about 450 words long, to be translated into English. Look up the bound volumes of MML Tripos papers in the Faculty Library in order to get an idea of the kind of style and register of the passages set for this test. The Part II Spanish Composition and Translation classes are designed to prepare you for it.

For Part II Translation from Spanish into English, the following is recommended: Thinking Spanish Translation: A Course in Translation Method: Spanish to English, Sándor Hervey, Ian Higgins & Louise M Haywood (London: Routledge, 1995).
