Department of Slavonic Studies
Research at the Department of Slavonic Studies
The Department of Slavonic Studies promotes international excellence in research over the widest range of language, literature, thought, history and culture in Russia and Ukraine, from the Middle Ages to the present day. A dynamic research culture of seminars and colloquia, together with a close-knit system of supervision and mentoring, encourages individual and collective endeavour. The intellectual vitality of the Department is evident in its various thriving research areas: Pre-Modern Russia, 19th and 20th Century Literary and Cultural Studies, Film and Visual Culture, Slavonic Linguistics, and Soviet History.
Of particular note at present is the Department's pioneering work in East European Memory Studies, with collaborative projects involving several members of the Department, and its initiative Cambridge Ukrainian Studies, which seeks to promote and contribute to the study of Ukraine in the United Kingdom and beyond. As the institutional centre for the Cambridge Committe for Russian and East European Studies, the Department also fosters links between members of other Faculties in the University whose research centres on the area.
