Russian Language: Text and Culture

This paper, new with effect from 2012-13, offers the opportunity to engage with advanced use of the Russian language in stimulating and intellectually challenging ways, through the analysis of various texts of different types and genres under a prescribed topic, as specified by the Faculty Board.

For Tripos 2013, the specified topic will be "Russian Identites". Students will be expected to engage critically with relevant texts, placing them in their cultural and political contexts and analyzing their formal features and content through written work in the Russian Language.

The examination paper will consist of texts and cllips, in Russian, which you will be invited to analyze critically in an extended essay in the Russian language. You can select one of two texts. Teaching for this paper will consist of fortnightly seminar classes, conducted entirely in Russian. Texts will be discussed in detail; students will be invited to analyze the content and the style of the texts, and to construct critical responses to both the subject and the form of the materials under discussion. Written work will be prepared for supervisions, and will be marked by supervisors.
