Neo-Latin and Translation
Clare College, Cambridge
Monday 20 - Tuesday 21 September 2010
The focus of the 2010 symposium was the theory and practice of translation in the Renaissance. The papers balanced interests in translation into Latin, both from the learned languages and the vernacular, with the translation of original Latin writings of the period into the vernacular. The symposium discussed the linguistic and rhetorical problems facing translators, exploring how these differed with the nature of the text translated and the historical and cultural contexts. It examined the purposes translation served as it moved texts between and within reading communities. The symposium also engaged with the theory of translation as it relates to these practices.
