Streaming Media Server

IT Support Services runs a streaming media server dedicated to distributing appropriately licensed materials soley for use in teaching within the Faculty. For legal reasons, the materials to which we don't hold copyright cannot be accessed from outside of the Cam domain and are subject to MML's own password-protected access, not Raven authentication. Further, we are legally required to obtain a signed Statement of Copyright Compliance from staff in advance of any materials being hosted on Faculty servers downloadable here. Materials to which the Faculty holds copyright are not subject to these restrictions.

Tripos Paper Website Development

Additionally, we can also develop dedicated websites for individual Tripos papers. Please contact the Help Desk in the first instance if you'd like to discuss the possibilities for your teaching.

Media Acquisition and Conversion Services

We run a self-service Media Conversion Facility within the CALL Facility. Using this facility it's possible to convert analogue audio and video sources (Mini-DV, VHS NTSC, PAL, and SECAM) to a digital format, or to scan in photographs, documents or 35 mm slides. If you're interested in learning to use this equipment please make an appointment through the Help Desk and we'll arrange a tutorial. Please be aware that you're responsible for the copyright clearance on any materials you digitise and you'll be asked to complete a form to confirm you've done this.

If you want to develop your own audio or video materials, e.g. podcasts, we have digital video cameras and tripods available for loan. If you don't have access to your own Mac to work on your post-production then you're welcome to use the Mac in the Media Conversion Facility. Again, training in the use of all this equipment can be arranged through the Help Desk.

Further help and support for the acquisition and conversion of teaching materials is available through the Language Centre

If we can't find a solution in-house, and/or if you're unable to use the Media Conversion Facility, then, subject to availability, the media staff in the Language Centre may be able to help you digitise your teaching materials. Please ensure that you contact the Language Centre in good time and with sufficient notice with any requests. The Language Centre can help with:

  • Analogue to digital media conversion
  • Extraction of clips from existing VHS non-copyright materials
  • Recordings from the channels they currently receive and distribute over the CUDN. Requests should include specific information regarding the programme, channel and time of recording. If you intend to use these digital recordings over the network within Cambridge for your teaching you will need to provide us with this information anyway in order for us to legally host the materials on the Faculty's servers.
