Computer-Assisted Language Resource Development in MML

DSCF1891

The Faculty invests heavily in computing. The CALL Facility consists of a suite of PCs that can be booked by staff for teaching, or used by students for independent study. MML teaching staff also develop their own language teaching materials for use by current Faculty and GCSE and A/AS Level students.

Materials to support current students within the Faculty

The Faculty continues to develop an extensive series of online materials to support students studying Modern and Medieval Languages.

Online translation exercises

Materials to support current students at Cambridge include online Computer-Assisted Translation exercises in the following languages:

Some modules are available online, whilst others are solely available within the CALL Facility or on the University's Public Workstation Facility. Check the individual language sections for further details.

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)

Through its Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies, Cambridge runs a University-wide Virtual Learning Environment (VLE); a customised version of the Open Source Sakai Project called CamTools. MML's Senior Language Teaching Officers make extensive use of Camtools to provide students with access to its sophisticated multimedia facilities and tools.

Online learning materials

Staff in the Faculty also work on the development of language resources of interest to schools and members of the public with an interest in language learning. Examples include:

Multikultur@

Multikultur@ is a free virtual immersion Academy for culturally-based Modern Foreign Language (MFL) created by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages aimed at encouraging Pre-GCSE, GCSE and A/AS Level students to continue their language studies.

Italia 2000

Italia 2000 was an EU-funded project to produce language learning material for intermediate and advanced learners of Italian based around authentic video clips.

Video Plus German

Video Plus German a CD-based resource aimed at intermediate to advanced level students of German (typically those in the 17-18 age group, or younger university or college students).

Collaboration with the Language Centre

As you would expect, staff based in the Faculty work closely with colleagues in the University's independent Language Centre which provides support for language learning to all Cambridge staff and students.

On the Language Centre's on-line resources pages University students have access to audio and video files (complete with questions, answers and transcripts) used for language teaching as well as an independent grammar revision programme for German called 'Just-in-time Grammar'.
