Problems with the Teaching Rooms

How do I report a problem with the equipment in one of the teaching rooms?

Problems should be reported through the usual IT Support Services Help Desk channels. In case of disruption to lectures we'll do all we can to get you up and running as soon as possible. If you encounter a problem, please always report it so that we're aware and can fix it.

I've never used the technology in the teaching rooms in the RFB before, is there any documentation I can consult?

Guidance as to what equipment is available where and how to use it (including video guides) is available in our extensive online audio-visual guide.

Is there a class I can take in using educational technology?

We run introductory sessions on how to use the technology in the teaching rooms at the start of each term. Expressions of interest are welcome at any time of the year; sessions are advertised internally via email.

Is there a quick start guide I can consult?

Customised quick start guides are available in all the rooms.

Do you handle room bookings?

No. Enquiries regarding room bookings should be made through your Departmental, or Faculty Office in the first instance.

What software is installed on the computers in the teaching rooms?

All the computers in the teaching rooms are standard Public Workstation Facility (PWF) PCs. The list of available software is available here.

How can I request additional packages be installed on the teaching room computers?

Contact the Help Desk and, funds permitting, we'll liaise with the Computing Service to get the software added in the next window of opportunity.

Problems with the Network

I've got a problem connecting to the network, what should I do?

Problems with the wired and wireless networks in the Raised Faculty Building should be reported to the Help Desk. Issues with wireless devices not supplied by the Faculty are handled on a best effort basis, resources permitting, but we'll help if we can.

Equipment Loans

What kind of equipment can I borrow from the Faculty?

The following pieces of equipment can be loaned from the Faculty. Prior booking through the Help Desk is essential.

  • Data projectors (2). Two data projectors are available for loan for use in, for example, conferences in college. Please note though that we can't provide support for these pieces of equipment outside of the RFB. Please ensure they're working when you arrive at college.
  • VGA out cables for Mac portables. Please be aware we only have limited numbers of these cables, so please return them as soon as possible so that we can help the next person who needs one. If you regularly use your Mac laptop for lectures it's undoubtedly best if you buy your own as we do occasionally run out. They're not expensive and are available through Apple or other retailers online, or through the Apple Store or John Lewis in the Grand Arcade. As there are several models to choose from you should either take your laptop along, or visit the Apple Store with the serial number of your computer.
  • Loan laptops (3). Please consult the Graduate Studies Office regarding the availablility of the loan laptops.
  • Firewire cables
  • Digital HD video cameras (2)
  • Tripods (2)
  • Edirol audio recorder (1)

Am I responsible for the equipment whilst it's in my care?

Yes.

Who can borrow equipment?

Staff and graduate students are welcome to book out any of the equipment. Requests from undergraduates are also welcome when supported by their course director/Director of Studies, as appropriate. CHUCOL students should approach either Mel or Geoffrey as course directors.

How long can I borrow the equipment?

The default borrowing period for all equipment, with the exception of the loan laptops (arranged by negotiation), is two days. Longer loan periods can be arranged, subject to equipment availability.

Personal Equipment

I've got a problem with my own personal computer, not bought through the Faculty, what can I do?

In the case of PCs, if your computer is still under warranty you should consult your manufacturer; if it's out of warranty, then contact the Computing Service's Hardware Support Division. Mac users should either contact the Hardware Support Division, or make an appointment to visit the Genuis Bar at the Apple Store in the Grand Arcade.
