The Conference will focus on the works and influence of Federico De Roberto (1861-1927). Born in Naples, but considered a Sicilian writer as he spent most of his life in Catania, De Roberto is best known for his novel I Viceré (1894) set in Sicily in the years from 1850 to 1880, which tells the story of the aristocratic Uzeda di Francalanza family during and after the Italian Risorgimento and Unification. After a period of neglect, De Roberto is again increasingly being studied in Italy, but although his most famous novel was translated into English by Archibald Colquhoun as The Viceroys(1961) he is scarcely known in the English-speaking world.
The title of the Conference, therefore, has a double meaning: it refers both to the historical and political context of De Roberto's work and to the resurgence of scholarly interest in him in Italy. Further, it is a major objective of the Conference to give impetus to such a resurgence outside Italy. Beginning with Antonio Di Grado's keynote paper, new light will be shed on the outdated naturalist and decadent readings of De Roberto, especially through an analysis of the major themes of love and power in his work. An examination of his influence on his contemporary, Luigi Pirandello, and on the later Sicilian writer, Tomasi di Lampedusa, will widen the debate on the treatment of the theme of the Risorgimento by Sicilian writers and on the historical novel in general. Finally, a contemporary and interdisciplinary perspective will be provided by Margherita Ganeri's paper, the concluding Round Table and the discussion and presentation of film director Roberto Faenza's new (2007) film based on I Viceré .
Il presente convegno internazionale è dedicato alla ricezione attuale dell'opera letteraria di Federico De Roberto (1861-1927). Nato a Napoli, ma considerato siciliano per aver vissuto quasi tutta la sua vita a Catania, De Roberto è conosciuto soprattutto per I Viceré (1894), il monumentale romanzo ambientato in Sicilia tra il 1850 e 1880, che racconta la storia dell'aristocratica famiglia Uzeda di Francalanza durante la fase del Risorgimento e dell'Unità d'Italia. Dopo un periodo di oblio, De Roberto è oggi sempre più studiato in Italia, ma resta ancora poco noto nel mondo angolofono, nonostante il suo romanzo più famoso sia stato tradotto in inglese da Archibald Colquhoun, con il titolo The Viceroys (1961).
Per questa ragione, proponiamo un titolo dal significato duplice: esso si riferisce sia al contesto storico-politico cui si lega l'opera di De Roberto sia alla rinascita italiana del dibattito sullo scrittore. Il principale obiettivo del convegno � la promozione di un rilancio degli studi su De Roberto anche al di fuori dell'Italia. A questo scopo, si metteranno in discussione le obsolete interpretazioni veristiche e decadenti, soprattutto grazie all'analisi dei temi portanti dell'opera derobertiana, in particolare l'amore e il potere, cui sarà dedicato, fra gli altri, l'intervento di apertura di Antonio Di Grado. Una disamina dell'influenza di De Roberto su Pirandello e sul più tardo Tomasi di Lampedusa allargherà la discussione al tema del trattamento del Risorgimento negli scrittori siciliani e nel romanzo storico in generale. Una prospettiva in chiave contemporanea e interdisciplinare sarà offerta dall'intervento di Margherita Ganeri. Il convegno si distingue, infine, per la presenza del regista Roberto Faenza. La tavola rotonda conclusiva, dedicata alla presentazione e discussione dell'omonimo film ispirato a I Viceré, che uscirà nell'autunno del 2007, conferisce alle giornate di studio, per effetto dell'evento cinematografico, un significato di forte attualità.

Lucy Cavendish College is situated on Lady Margaret Road, about 10 minutes' walk from Cambridge city centre. It is about 3 miles from the Cambridge Railway Station, and 1 mile from the Cambridge Bus Station.
Registration
The Conference fee is �40, which includes lunch, coffee and tea for both days. It does not include accommodation.
For postgraduate students there is a reduced charge of �20.
