A GRAMMAR OF MEDIEVAL GREEK

The University of Cambridge has been awarded a major research grant by the Arts and Humanities Research Board, for the compilation of a reference grammar of Medieval Greek. The project, which will last for five years, is under the direction of Dr David Holton and Professor Geoffrey Horrocks. The aim of the project is to produce a systematic and comprehensive description of the Greek language between 1100 and 1700. We are seeking to appoint two full-time Research Associates to work on the project from 1 October 2004.

The Research Associates must have a PhD in Greek philology or linguistics and experience of working with texts in medieval vernacular Greek. For one of the posts, we seek someone with a specialised knowledge of literary and non-literary texts of the period, editorial practices and palaeography. The second post requires a specialisation in Greek historical linguistics, with relevant research experience. For this post a particular expertise in historical syntax may be an advantage. One of the post-holders should also have significant IT skills (web-site and database construction). Both Research Associates should be fluent in English (the working language of the project) and Modern Greek, and they should also have a good working knowledge of at least one other major European language.

The project will be based in Cambridge, but candidates should be prepared to travel to libraries and archives in Europe, and to participate in conferences.

Candidates should send SEVEN COPIES of their application, including a detailed curriculum vitae, list of publications, and the names and addresses of two referees who are familiar with their work in the relevant field. Applications should be sent, in hard copy, to arrive by Friday 9 July 2004, to: Dr David Holton, Department of Other Languages, Faculty of Modern Languages, Raised Faculty Building, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DA, UK. Referees should be asked to write to Dr Holton by the same date. Short-listed candidates will be summoned for interviews to be held on 26 July.

The successful candidates will be employees of the University of Cambridge. The scale of stipends is £18,893 to £28,279 and is pensionable. Appointments will be made for five years from 1 October 2004, subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 6 months. Candidates are advised that the host Faculty has a non-smoking policy.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to either Dr Holton (dwh11@sel.cam.ac.uk) or Professor Horrocks (gch1000@hermes.cam.ac.uk).
