Modern Greek Section
Postgraduate courses
The Modern Greek Section welcomes postgraduate students at both Masters (MPhil) and PhD level.
Modern Greek options can be included in the MPhil in European Literature & Culture. A module on "Myth and history in Modern Greek literature" is offered when resources permit. Students who wish to follow a Modern Greek « pathway » through the MPhil can choose to write their core course essay and thesis on Greek subjects, in addition to taking the Modern Greek module. They must choose one further module from the list, either in another European language or on an interdisciplinary topic. Applications from candidates who wish to specialise in Modern Greek are strongly encouraged. Enquiries about Modern Greek options may be addressed to Professor David Holton, dwh11@cam.ac.uk.
Applications for research leading to the PhD are particularly welcome in the following areas: late medieval and early modern Greek literature, including the Cretan Renaissance; 19th- and early 20th-century poetry; prose-fiction up to the 1960s; history of Greek. Applicants are recommended to contact Professor David Holton, dwh11@cam.ac.uk, at an early stage, to discuss their proposed topic. See the list of Current and Former Ph.D. Students and their research topics.
A Modern Greek Research Seminar meets about four times each term, to hear papers by members of the seminar or visiting speakers. Click here to view the graduate seminar programme for the Michaelmas Term 2011. In addition, there is an annual programme of special lectures given by invited speakers. The Modern Greek Section also houses a major research project for a Grammar of Medieval Greek.
