Visiting Students at the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages

Students registered full-time at an overseas institution can undertake a period of short-term study in the UK, where that study is part of their qualification, provided that qualification is at the same level or above as a UK degree.

The following is a brief guide for those who wish to establish a more formal status as a Visiting Student to the Faculty.

Facilities

As a Visiting Student, you will be able to attend lectures in the University, use the facilities in MML Graduate Centre (desk space and computer facilities), the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) facility, the Faculty and University libraries, and join in the life of the relevant Department and the Faculty. You may also attend Faculty seminars, although it should be noted that attendance at lectures and seminars may require the permission of the lecturer concerned.

Fee

There is a charge of £500 per term, or £2000 for a period of twelve months.

To Apply

If you would like to apply for Visiting Student Status you should complete an application form giving a short outline of the proposed research you wish to carry out in Cambridge and return the form to the relevant Department.

Your application will be considered by the Head of the relevant Department, and approved by the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Committee.

Visa requirements

If you are registered on a full-time course at an overseas institution and wish to undertake no more than 50% of your course at Cambridge, we may sponsor you for a Tier 4 visa to study at Cambridge. Visiting Graduate students undertaking two or three terms' full-time supervised research in Cambridge may be required to register with the Board of Graduate Studies.

College membership

College membership may be offered for the duration of your visit, but this depends on your being sponsored by a member of the Department you are visiting. Affiliation with a college will allow you the right to use the MCR and to buy meal tickets among other benefits. Please note that there is a set college fee.

Accommodation

The Faculty is unable to provide accommodation. Colleges may provide accommodation or help in finding accommodation. Please note that at peak times e.g. October there is a shortage of College accommodation.

More information about finding accommodation in Cambridge can be found on the International Students webpages: http://www.cam.ac.uk/international/life.html.
