Introduction
The dissertation must not exceed 80,000 words, including footnotes, references and appendices, but excluding bibliographies. Only under exceptional circumstances will permission be granted to exceed the limit. Should you wish to apply to exceed the word limit you must write to the Board of Graduate Studies at least three months before submitting your dissertation with a full supporting statement from your Supervisor. See Code of Practice You are not allowed to include the whole or the major part of your MPhil thesis within your PhD dissertation. However, you are entitled to include such parts that are connected with the argument of your PhD. You should state in a preface to your dissertation which parts, if any, have been drawn from earlier MPhil work.
