Research Training Programme | Current Year's Programme

Programme for 2011/12

Graduate Training Officer: Dr John Leigh

The Faculty runs a programme of professional training for the benefit of PhD research students. Sessions will deal with key aspects of an academic career: library resources, applications and interviews, conference papers, the teaching of language, publishing, IT (including html), and project management. The sessions on Project Management, Supervising, and Assessing are compulsory for first year students. Additional places on these courses are open to all other PhD students on a first-come first-served basis. Attendance at Distinguished Scholar Workshops and departmental Research Seminars are compulsory for all students. (The Department of Linguistics provides separate DSW events for Linguistics' PhDs, though all are, of course, welcome to attend the literary events.)

In addition to the programme you see below, the School of the Arts and Humanities (CSAH), are running a School-wide programme, and you may choose sessions from this provision to make up your total. The sessions are listed below MML's provision.

The venue for the majority of training sessions is the Graduate Centre Seminar Room or the CALL Facility. The Distinguished Scholar Workshops are held in colleges and details will be sent to students beforehand.

First year PhD students must attend 10 days of training through the year. Second and Third Year students must attend 8 days. Please discuss the options with your supervisor. Departmental Research Seminars count as 3 days of training (4 for French PhDs who also attend the FGRS). Students should choose the training sessions that most interest them to make up the balance of their number of training days. (Linguistics students should refer to their programme.) Organisers of departmental graduate research seminar series will get a credit of 2 days for this work.

The Graduate Office will contact you in advance of every session, to check if you would like to attend. You may, however, book ahead by emailing: mmlgrad@hermes.cam.ac.uk.

.

Details of Research training networds are listed below, together with dates of workshops organised thus far. You are welcome to include attendance at relevant events organised by these networks in your total of training days for the year.

TRAINING PROGRAMME 2011/12

A. DEPARTMENTAL RESEARCH SEMINARS
Each individual graduate student should attend a research seminar in the relevant department at least a fortnight. Please check the research seminar page for details. Additionally, students may choose to attend seminar series in their particular research area. Listings of relevant seminars are available below (and this list should continue to grow), adding more items to the menu of courses which students may choose from.

B. DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR WORKSHOPS
Once a term, the whole graduate community will meet for a day with a distinguished scholar from the UK, Europe, the US or beyond. These days will consist of workshops, presentations and round-tables based around a broad set of current themes.
