Funding your course at MML

You're advised to search through the Graduate Funding database on the Board of Graduate Studies website for access to a full list of scholarships and bursaries. When making a search, keep the terms of your search as broad as possible, e.g. leave the 'purpose of funding' category blank.

The following sections provide a short list of the major sources of funding available to MPhil and PhD applicants to the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages.


Overseas students:

Scholarship or grant Details, including duration and amount of award
Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme (CISS) (PhD) Valued at the difference between the Home and Overseas University Composition Fee. Scholarships run for 2-3 years.
The University of Cambridge will offer, via the Cambridge Trusts, approximately 80 Cambridge International Scholarships to Overseas Students who embark on a research course in each academical year. The awards will be made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.

Gates Cambridge Trust (MPhil & PhD) Full studentship. Scholarships run for 1-3 years. Must be registered for an MPhil course or for research leading to a PhD. Details and application forms available at: http://www.gatesscholar.org/
Cambridge Commonwealth Trust (MPhil & PhD) Varies from full- to part-studentships. Scholarships run for 1-3 years. Must be registered for an MPhil course or for research leading to a PhD. Details and application forms available at: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/index.html
Cambridge Overseas Trust (incorporating a number of different awards) (MPhil & PhD) Varies from full- to part-studentships. Scholarships run for 1-3 years. Must be registered for an MPhil course or for research leading to a PhD. Details and application forms available at: http://www.cambridgetrusts.org/
Jebb Fund (PhD) Three Jebb Studentships are available for advanced stud:, one of some subject in the field of European literature from the time of the foundation of Constantinople to the birth of Dante; one of some subject in the field of European literature from the time of the birth of Dante onwards; and another of some subject in the field of European literature of any period. EU students:

Scholarship or grant Details, including duration and amount of award
AHRC studentships (MPhil & PhD) Full studentships orfFees-only awards. In 2009 the AHRC changed the way in which it offered funding to postgraduate students in the arts and humanities. Students no longer apply to the AHRC direct, but apply to their department at Cambridge University for an award. Scholarships run for 1-3 years. Wolfson Doctoral Studentships (PhD) As part of the AHRC selection process, we are additionally selecting one PhD candidate starting in 2012/13 for a prestigious Wolfson Foundation award. The award covers full fees and maintenance starting at £15,000 p.a. year, and includes a generous Research Allowance. No application is required: eligible candidates will be considered automatically.
CHESS Studentships (incorporating a number of different awards) (MPhil & PhD) This competition supports approximately 75 UK and EU graduate students in each academical year. The University is generously supported by a number of partners including: Trinity College, The Newton Trust, Colleges, Allen Meek & Read, Le Bas, Piggott, Vergottis, Thalman, and the Millenium Fund.
(PhD) Awards are made for three years and students must intend to commence their PhD studies during the academic year of the competition. (MPhil) Awards are made for 1 year only for MPhil study. Bursaries are valued at half cost for UK (and UK resident) students. Bursaries are valued at fees-only for EU resident students. General:

(PhD) Robert Gardiner Memorial Scholarship Full studentship for one year initially, renewable depending on progress. The Scholarships are intended to assist or enable students of Irish universities to proceed to the University of Cambridge for the purpose ofundergraduate or postgraduate study.The Electors will give preference to applicants who are to study for a research degree, or who are applying for a Master's degree with a view to progressing to research at a later date.
