Frank Zipfel is visiting fellow at Magdalene College for Lent 2013. He is Akademischer Oberrat at the Institut für Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (Comparative Literature) at Mainz University (Germany). Much of his published work, including the book Fiktion, Fiktivität, Fiktionalität. Analysen zur Fiktion in der Literatur und zum Fiktionsbegriff in der Literaturwissenschaft (Berlin, 2001) is concerned with theory of fiction, narratology and literary theory. Another focus of interest is tragicomedy in 19th and 20th century European literature. In his forthcoming Tragikomödien. Kombinationsformen von Tragik und Komik im europäischen Drama des 19. und 20. Jahrhundertshe examines in which way and to what effect potentially comic and potentially tragic elements are combined in dramatic texts by H. v. Kleist, A. d. Musset, L. Pirandello, G. Hauptmann, S. Beckett and others. His work also embraces intercultural studies and interart studies. He has published on libretto as a literary genre and on European authors from different periods (Cholderlos de Laclos, Goethe, Hofmannsthal). His most recent work is concerned with unreliable narration in literature and film as well as transmedial narratology.
