German Scheduled Papers in Part II

Guidelines for Part II

The scheduled papers will introduce you to some of the most important events and movements in European intellectual, literary and political history. The German-speaking nations have had a decisive hand in making Europe, and European culture, what it is today. A knowledge of German is equally essential for understanding medieval Europe, and studying the history of the German language is a natural complement to the study of Romance philology or of linguistics. One common feature of the German literature, thought and history papers, and of the accompanying lectures is that they emphasise the historical and general philosophical dimension to a much greater extent than those of any other Department in the Faculty. In papers Ge 8, 9 and 10 (18th, 19th and 20th century) it is compulsory for candidates to answer at least one question from these areas and it is permissible to devote two of your three answers to them.

The Department runs eight German options exclusive to Part II: Ge 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15). The Department also participates in three comparative papers. Students may also borrow certain papers from other Triposes.

In all cases specimen or past examination papers, which are kept in the MML Library, give some idea of the kind of questions that are set. See also Marking criteria for scheduled paper essays and the Faculty policy on plagiarism

The scheduled papers available in Part  II

A full list of all the MML Scheduled papers available is given in Schedule II.

Back to top The comparative papers

There is a substantial German contribution to three of the five papers in comparative studies currently organised by the Faculty. Candidates may offer only one of the two papers CS5 (The Body) and CS 6 (Modern European Film), but there is no such restriction in respect of papers CS 1 (The Romance Languages), CS 2 (The Germanic Languages) [however Paper CS2 will be suspended as from 1 October 2008], and CS 3 (The Slavonic Languages).

A full list of all the Scheduled papers available, including the comparative papers, is given in Schedule II.
