Paper GE B3
Translation into German and a test in German through audio-visual media
The examinations
This paper consists of two parts:
- Two passages in English, of up to 400 words in total, for translation into German.
- A test in German through audio-visual media in which you will be shown a video of 7-9 minutes' duration and then asked to answer in German a number of questions to show your comprehension of what you have seen and heard. The conduct of the test should be carefully noted in advance.
Teaching
You will be prepared for both parts of this exercise in classes arranged by the Department to which you will be assigned as you were assigned to IA classes in your first year. You must therefore expect to attend classes throughout the year as follows:- one fortnightly class in Translation into German (also known as 'Prose Composition' or 'Prose' for short). Practice passages will be set and marked and instruction will be given in points of grammar and vocabulary arising out of these passages. Additionally useful practice material and exercises will be set by your teacher and can be found on the Faculty website here.
- one fortnightly class to test your comprehension of the language using various media. This class will involve practice of the examination exercise and discussion with one of the departmental lectors and will therefore also maintain and advance your oral proficiency in German - important as a preparation for your Year Abroad.
- one fortnightly lecture in German on themes realting to contemporary German society, culture and politics. These lectures listed as Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte der beiden deutschen Staaten. The topics are linked to those discussed in the video clips used for the audio-visual exercise.
