Introduction to German 3: German Literature and Culture

The examination for this paper lasts three hours. The paper is set on two texts, and on language work on three specific topic areas.

The two texts are:

• E. T. A. Hoffmann, Das Fräulein von Scuderi
• Franz Kafka, selected short stories.

The three topic areas are:

• Die Deutschen und ihre Geschichte
• Familie und Gesellschaft
• Kunst und Literatur

The Examination consists of three parts:

• Section A (counting for 30% of this paper). Translation from one of the set texts.
• Section B (counting for 30% of this paper). Passage for comment in English from the other set text. (Whilst candidates are encouraged to set the passage in context, interpretation of language points will also be taken into account.)
• Section C (counting for 40% of this paper). German Essay (choice from five questions: two broader questions on each set author; one from each topic area).
