Tiarks Awards

The Tiarks German Scholarship Fund has as its objective the furthering of German studies in Cambridge. It supports graduate work in the following ways:

A Tiarks German Scholarship of up to £10,000 will be offered to a graduate student, preferably in the second year of his or her work towards the PhD and preferably for research in a German-speaking country. These conditions may however be waived by the Electors.

Tiarks Bursaries of up to £8,000 will be offered:

1) to candidates for the MPhil in European Literature who are offering at least one German module, and

2) to graduate students researching German topics in the Department of German and Dutch and who are in their first year of work towards the PhD degree.

Tiarks Grants. Small grants, particularly for travel, may be made to graduate students studying German topics in the Department of German and Dutch, provided that funds have already been sought from the applicant's college.

The current conditions and the methods of application for these awards are given in the notices below.

Tiarks German Scholarship: notice

The Electors to the Tiarks German Scholarship give notice that they are prepared to receive applications, which must be sent to the Head of the Department of German and Dutch, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DA, so as to reach him not later than 31 July 2013. Applications should take the form of a letter which includes details of the means by which it is proposed to finance the course, including all sources of income, available or applied for, and the names and contact details of two referees who have been asked to send a statement in support of the candidate's application to the Electors at the address above. The applicant's email address should be included. A statement of the course of advanced study or research which the candidate proposes to undertake if elected should accompany the letter of application.

Any person who is or is about to be registered as a Graduate student in the University is eligible for the Scholarship but preference may be given to candidates in their second year of work towards the PhD. The Scholarship is tenable for one year from 1 October following the election. Some considerable portion of the year shall be spent in Germany or some other German-speaking country, though the Electors may in special cases relax this restriction. It will be the duty of the Scholar to undertake advanced study or research in the language or literature of Germany, under the direction of the Head of Department of German and Dutch, according to a scheme to be approved by the Electors.

The stipend of the Scholarship will amount to not more than £10,000 and will be determined by the Electors after taking account of any other financial resources that may be available to the Scholar. The stipend will be paid in two equal instalments on 1 October and 1 February following the election. The Electors have power to withhold the second instalment if they are not satisfied that a Scholar is pursuing his or her studies with sufficient diligence.

The Scholar is eligible for re-election on not more than two occasions. The Election will be made in September 2013.

Tiarks German Bursaries: notice

The Electors to the Tiarks German Scholarship give notice that they intend to award Tiarks Bursaries for the academical year 2013-2014. The Bursaries will have a value of up to £8,000, depending on the other sources of income available to the successful candidates.

Applications are invited from candidates for the M.Phil. in European Literature offering themselves for examination in at least one German module in 2014, or from graduate students in the Department of German and Dutch who in 2013-14 will be in their first year of work towards the M. Litt. or Ph.D. degree. A letter of application, stating the course of study or research which it is proposed to undertake in 2013-14 and the means by which it is proposed to finance the course, including all sources of income, available or applied for, in that period, must be sent to the Head of the Department of German, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DA, so as to reach him not later than 31 July 2013. The applicant's email address should also be included.

The Bursaries will be paid in two equal instalments on 1 October 2013 and 1 February 2014. On the second occasion the Bursars will be required to satisfy the Electors that they are diligently pursuing the proposed course of study or research. If the Electors are not so satisfied they have power to withhold the payment of the second instalment. It is expected that the award will be made in September 2013.

  1. Tiarks Scholars and Bursars and
  2. other persons engaged in the University in study or research in the language or literature of Germany.
