Objectives

The aim of the project is to explore the importance of the genre of observations and remarks on the French language, its genesis and evolution.

The original AHRC project had two complementary dimensions: the publication of a monograph which considers for the first time the contribution of the genre as a whole to the history of linguistic thought in France and to the standardisation of the language, and the production of scholarly editions in both paper and electronic form of some of the key texts.

The first stage of the database (Corpus des remarques sur la langue française (XVIIe siècle), directed by Wendy Ayres-Bennett, Paris, Classiques Garnier Numérique, 2011 has been published and we are now intending to add further texts and to extend its chronological scope.
