Language work in Part IA
The Tripos structure embodies a progressive approach to language acquisition, concentrating on different skills in each of the years of French study. The language classes should not be considered independently of the scheduled papers: the skills they are designed to develop are a prerequisite for the study of French literature, culture and linguistics.
The Part IA course in French is designed to develop an existing knowledge of the language to a high level of proficiency, and to prepare students for further language study in Part IB and Part II. For Part IA, there are two written papers and an oral examination, and while each tests different skills, the areas of preparation overlap and complement each other. Descriptions of these papers can be found using the links at the top of this page.
