Department of French

Introduction

Welcome to the Department of French. I hope that you will find the study of French in Cambridge both enjoyable and intellectually challenging.

This site has been compiled to introduce you to the course and its requirements. You should use it for reference throughout your time here. The course is designed to provide you not only with linguistic skills and academic knowledge specific to French, but also with important transferable skills such as the organization and presentation of your ideas on paper and verbally, skills which will be valuable to you whatever your chosen path after Cambridge.

This site also contains a number of other useful pieces of information. There is a link to the Faculty guidelines on Supervision, which have been approved by the Department and which are designed to ensure you get the best out of this form of teaching. In addition, a list of members of the Department and College Officers and their research and teaching interests is included. More information about the Department, and about the Faculty, can be seen in the Staff section.

The French Department is the largest in the Faculty, in terms of both staff and student numbers. We try to get to know as many of you as possible and we make every effort to help you get the best from your course. Enquiries should be directed in the first instance to the Secretary of the Department, Esther Palmer erp26@cam.ac.uk, but I hope that you will find all of us very approachable.

We are extremely proud of the reputation of the Department which has consistently been judged outstanding in both teaching and research. As you join us, we wish you every success.

Michael Moriarty mm10005@cam.ac.uk
Head of Department
