The University examinations for the Certificate and Diploma in modern languages are open to students of any faculty. The standard required for the Certificate is somewhat higher than A-level. The Diploma corresponds to the standard required for part 1B of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos. There are also compulsory oral examinations: in May for the Certificate, at the beginning of the Easter term for the Diploma.
A full range of teaching is available in Dutch for both of these qualifications, catering for beginners as well as those who already have some knowledge of the language. The basic scheme of study is as follows:

The courses are:

completed the Certificate or who posses a knowledge of Dutch of
about A-level standard):

The conversation classes are given by Mrs. Eagar in the
Michaelmas Term and in the Lent Term. In addition to the
Certificate and Diploma classes, all students should allow at
least 3 to 4 hours per week for private study (including some in
the CALL Centre) and for written exercises. Mrs.
Eagar will advise on grammars and dictionaries. Supervisions
are not normally required, but students wishing for more
tuition should arrange this in consultation with their College
and with Mrs. Eagar or Mrs. Strietman.
All those wishing to attend courses leading to the Certificate
or the Diploma Examinations should complete an application
form, downloadable here, and obtain the
approval of the Director of Studies in Modern Languages in
their College.
