Toby is currently working in the Education First Research Unit, and is primarily concerned with the building of a large-scale speech corpus of learner English, "The EF-Cambridge Open English Learner Database: a data-driven approach to second language learning", and the development of related tools.

He was previously employed in the project "Categories and Gradience in Intonation" and in forensic projects in the Phonetics Laboratory. He is one of the authors of the DyViS Database. Prior to this, Toby was a student of Classics at Cambridge, and has an MPhil in Indo-European philology.

Besides language acquisition, Toby takes a keen interest in all aspects of phonetics and phonology, language technology, and the documentation of endangered languages.
