Hae-Sung is from Seoul, South Korea. Her first degree was in Child Welfare & Studies and English Language & Literature at the Sookmyung Women's University (2001-2005), focussing on child psychology and development. She was subsequently awarded an MSc with distinction in Developmental Linguistics, at the University of Edinburgh (2005-2006). Her PhD research looked at segmental/suprasegmental interactions in Seoul Korean, specifically how Seoul Korean speakers use various acoustic cues such as speech melody and timing to form phrases in speech, and how these cues are used by listeners. She is also interested in speech rhythm (in both linguistic and psychological senses) and psychophonetics.
