Rethinking Comparative Syntax (ReCoS)
Call for papers for SLE workshop on differential subject marking and ergativity
The ReCoS group at the University of Cambridge is organising a workshop at the 46th meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE) in September 2013 on 'Differential subject marking and ergative phenomena'.
The deadline for short abstracts is very tight (12th November 2012), but at this stage all that is required is a brief 300 word summary. If the workshop is accepted, we will then ask for full abstracts to be reviewed.
The full call for papers is available here.
Cambridge Comparative Syntax Conference (CamCoS) 2
The second Cambridge Comparative Syntax conference, organised by the ReCoS project, will take place 10-11 May 2013. It is going to be a two-day conference with the first day being a general comparative syntax meeting. The second day will feature invited speakers presenting their work in the area of focus. For further details, please see the CamCoS section of this site.
LAGB Worshop on Case
The 2012 meeting of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain will feature a workshop on Case, organised by Michelle Sheehan, Anders Holmberg, and Alison Biggs. The call for papers can be found here.
SLE Workshop on Discourse Configurationality
The 2012 Societas Linguista Europaea conference will include a thematic workshop on parametric variation in discourse configurationality, organised by Jenneke van der Wal and Tim Bazalgette of the ReCoS project. More information is available on the conference website.
Open Project Meetings
The ReCoS group regularly holds open project meetings where their ongoing research can be presented to and discussed by the syntax community in Cambridge.
MPhil Parametric Variation Seminar
In Michaelmas 2011, the ReCoS group ran a seminar considering the parametric settings of various languages from the perspectives of the hierarchies outlined in the project proposal, starting with well-studied cases such as English and Germanic, and gradually moving on to less familiar languages. A summary programme can be found here.
MPhil Null Arguments and Syntactic Theory Seminar
The MPhil syntax for Lent 2012 seminar concentrates on the field of parametric variation seen for null arguments, with each seminar concentrating on different null argument phenomena. The programme can be found here.
SyntaxLab
SyntaxLab provides a forum for informal presentation and discussion of syntatic research and work-in-progress, with frequent talks by researchers outside the university. The list of speakers for the current term is given here.
Bantu Reading Group
In Michaelmas 2011, Jenneke van der Wal ran a reading group on Bantu linguistics, covering topics from tonal phonology to object asymmetries in comparative syntax. The full reading list is available here.
Cambridge Biolinguistics Initiative
The Cambridge Biolinguistics Initiative (CBI) is an ongoing interdisciplinary series of seminars, lectures, and reading groups on a variety of issues relating to the biology of language, with a focus on the perspective taken by the Minimalist Program. Details of previous and future sessions can be found on CBI's official blog. CBI is currently organised by the two PhD students on the ReCoS project, Tim Bazalgette and Alison Biggs.
