Introduction

This text is taken from Marcia su Roma e dintorni (1933) by the Sardinian anti-fascist and politician Emilio Lussu, an account of his experience of the rise of fascism written in exile in France.

The style is direct throughout Lussu's memoir and your translation should try to catch this sense of a 'witnessing' tone. The tenses are straightforward in the passage - but watch out for the trapassato. While simple to understand, you should be aware of the problems of rendering in idiomatic English words and phrases like 'combattente', 'fasci', 'primitivo' and even 'ufficiali superiori'.
