ab initio German Paper GeA1 (B)

Strategies:

Read through the text carefully. The questions run alongside the text, so it should be fairly easy to find the sections in the text which relate to the questions. Look out for ‘pointers’, words which appear in the text and also in the question. We have marked the pointer words in the first two questions in bold. When answering the questions, it is all right to use words and short phrases from the text, but not to lift whole clauses or sentences. Using part of a question to begin your answer is also permitted and a way to get going. For example, you could start the answer to Question 1 (a) off with : Viele Jugendliche verwenden die 'Kanak Sprak', weil sie.....

In the following, we have given you some help in English for answering the questions. In the actual exam paper, naturally, there are only the questions.

1 Answer the following questions in GERMAN:

(a) Warum verwenden viele Jugendliche eine Kunstsprache, die sie mit 'Kanak Sprak' bezeichnen ?

  • This is about the way this language sounds and about the conflict between young people and grown ups.

    (b) Wie unterscheidet sich das authentische Alltagsdeutsch von dem 'ordentlichen' Deutsch, das Ausländer lernen?

  • There are three points to look out for here.

    (c) Von welchen Faktoren ist die Art und Weise, wie sich die Leute ausdrücken, abhängig?

  • This is about what people do, where they live, what social standing they have.

    (d) Wie erklärt der Autor, dass die deutsche Sprache ständig in Bewegung ist?

  • This is about how vocabulary goes in an out of fashion.

    (e) Wie beurteilt der Autor die häufigen Entlehnungen aus dem Englischen, die momentan in der deutschen Gegenwartssprache zu finden sind?

  • The author does not have a clear-cut view on this.

    (f) Wie wird guter Sprachgebrauch in Deutschland gefördert?

  • Two examples are stated in the text.

    (g) Eine lebende Sprache muss sich ständig verändern, auch wenn das den Puristen nicht gefällt. (120 - 150 words)

  • Make sure you address the question, also using vocabulary from it. Stay within the word limit and argue your own opinion consistently. Use phrases you have learnt for your practice essays in German.
