Rebecca Breen, Sidney Sussex College - biographical note (email: rb333@cam.ac.uk)

Rebecca Breen is in her first year of PhD study in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and is exploring testimony in the context of visual culture in Latin American. She completed her thesis for an MPhil in European Literature in 2003 on the work of Frida Kahlo, and is currently examining the sculptures and installations of the Colombian artist, Doris Salcedo, seeking to elucidate and expand upon the intersections between theories of trauma, testimony, and the visual.

Abi Loxham, Fitzwilliam College - biographical note (email: arl23@cam.ac.uk)

Abigail Loxham is currently in the first year of her PhD studying identity as it is explored and represented in contemporary Spanish film. She completed an MPhil in European Literature in 2004 with a thesis on the films of Julio Medem as well as work on filmic depictions of Barcelona and representations of maternity and feminine sexuality in twentieth century Spanish novels. Her PhD focuses particularly on the depictions of supposed 'peripheral' identities, especially in films made by Basque and Catalan directors.

Bueno, ¿empiezo yo?

Shall I start? I am doing a PhD, I am in my first year. I'm looking at Colombian cultural production -that's literature, cinema and fine art. I'm currently working on the novels of Laura Restrepo, a fairly well-known author - looking at issues of gender and sexuality in her work. I'll soon be moving on to the work of Debora Arango, a Colombian painter. She's very old now, but was producing art since about the 1940's. I'll probably be going to Colombia in September of this year for research purposes.

Well, I'm also working on Colombian culture. I'm working on the art of Doris Salcedo and working with theories of testimony and of memory.

I am working on contemporary Spanish cinema, in particular the issue of identity in cinema. I'm currently working on two directors one, who is Basque, Julio Medem and the other, who is Catalan, Bigas Luna. I'm interested in marginal identities and if it is possible to define Spanish cinema or if I should refer to films made in Spain but from varying points of view. I'm interested in perspective, theories on film and how they are applied in a Spanish context.
